The hardest part of finding a first distributor in Türkiye is rarely getting a meeting. Turkish distributors are, in general, open to hearing about new brands. The harder part is telling the difference between genuine enthusiasm and a distributor who says yes to everything and then struggles to actually move product.
Start from shelf space, not from interest
A distributor's stated interest in a brand matters less than the retail relationships they already hold in the specific category. The most useful early question isn't "are you interested" but "which retailers would carry this, and do you already have standing relationships with them." A distributor with genuine category-relevant retail access is worth more than one with broad general interest and no specific placement in mind.
Understand what the distributor actually does
Distribution in Türkiye covers a wide range of business models — some distributors hold inventory and manage logistics directly, others operate closer to a sales agency model without taking on stock. Neither is inherently better, but the difference materially changes what the brand needs to handle itself, from import and warehousing to invoicing and after-sales support.
Ask how they handle a brand that underperforms in the first quarter
Every new brand launch carries a real chance of a slow start. How a distributor talks about that scenario — whether they have a plan for adjusting pricing, promotion or placement, or whether the conversation stalls entirely on the question — is often more revealing than how they talk about a successful launch.
Pricing and margin expectations need to be explicit early
Misaligned expectations on margin structure are one of the most common reasons a distributor relationship stalls after a promising start. Turkish retail pricing dynamics, and the margin a distributor needs to make the arrangement worthwhile, are worth confirming explicitly and in writing before a first shipment, not inferred after the fact.
A single strong distributor beats several lukewarm ones
It's tempting, especially early on, to sign with every distributor who expresses interest. In practice, a single well-matched distributor with real category relationships and a clear plan for the brand typically outperforms several loosely committed partners spread across the market, and is considerably easier to manage.
